  • The school has concluded the majority of their pool sessions for the remainder of the school year. Adaptive swimmers and the kindergarten class will still use the pool for a small portion of the day.  Scott has presented a new pool schedule that includes another Parent Tot swim, an adjusted lunch lap swim, and time for swim lessons, as time permits and instructors are available.
  • I will be hosting another round of Adult Swim Lessons, please send any interested persons my way.
  • Scott is hosting his annual Winter Sprint Triathlon on Saturday, January 4th at 10a!

Stephanie Payne ~ Happy New Year!
OPERATIONS
  • Our Halloween event went very well; we had approximately 70 patrons and could have used more pumpkins! Hammer & Wikan, as well as Petersburg IGA donated pumpkins!  It was a nice and welcomed change to just do the Pumpkin Plunge with food and movie afterwards.  Thank you, Ambre, for helping with the food with Chrystine and me.  Julie and guards/front desk held down the gym side, with Scott and guards on plunge detail.  We would like to keep this same event programming in future.
  • Dive-In Movies are still a hit! We have our movie line up and advertise via FB and around the facility – and word of mouth!!
  • 2025 Jingle & Mingle was another great event! Thank you to our advisory board members for jumping in to assist!  Hammer and Wikan donated the food and drinks, while Petersburg Pet Center donated some treats for visitors to take home.  We saw a lighter crowd this time but all who came really enjoyed the evening with Santa, PD, and games.
  • Staff have been amazing at helping to keep facility safe with snow removal and upkeep! We have also received assistance from PW.  Groundskeeper Daniel Pust has been working with PW to keep funeral services possible.
  • New facility schedules are available everywhere! Please send folks to our FB page, website, or view fliers around the facility to see what has changed for availability.
  • The school will be using our gym for this 2nd half of the school year, leaving us with more opportunities to schedule pool time for the public (albeit there will be less public gym time during the day).
  • We have increased our rental fees (not membership fees) and updated our passholder agreement, both have been in effect since Jan.5th. The passholder agreement is available on our website for viewing, as well as our current rental rates.
  • Youth Volleyball with Coach Chrystine has begun! Looking forward to another wonderful season!
  • A lifeguard course is coming up on Jan. 30th – Feb 1st . Any interest needs to be sent to Scott for inclusion in the course.  Reminder: taking the course does not guarantee employment.
  • Per our partnership with AMSEA, we will be hosting a Drill Conductor course, taught by AMSEA Instructor Reba Temple, on Sat. Feb 7th, 8a – 6p. Registration is through AMSEA website.
  • Swimming lessons will begin in February, with a swim assessment scheduled during a Parent Tot swim session to help us to get new swimmers in the correct course offerings. Contact Scott for more scheduling information and send adult LTS interest to me.
  • If anyone is interested in coaching soccer – please contact Julie Anderson so that programming can be arranged in time for a late spring/early summer season!
  • On April 4th I will be instructing an AK Water Wise course (with optional certification) with elements of a Suddenly In Command course alongside Katy Pendell from AMSEA. This will be a Rainforest Survival Series offering and free to the public!  Local knowledge will be invited to help lead sections of the course.
MAINTENANCE
  • Continued conversations with RESPEC Engineering and contractors for Aquatic sewer repair. We have negotiated lower bid amounts but will sustain an increase in engineering fees (although they are minimal).  We have just received 1 unanimous yes vote for a resolution to inject $300K from General Fund into the Aquatic Center Fund to support moving forward with the bid award and project.  Two more Assembly meetings and votes are needed for resolution to pass.  Final vote will be on Feb 2, 2026.  Project to commence end of April and last through summer.  Full facility offerings are planned but no guarantees.  We will do our very best.
  • Jim Refeldt conducted his audit Nov 22rd thru 26th . He knew that we had Convergint coming and reached out to Kyle Hardwick (Convergint) for more information knowing that he would be visiting next.  He also provided him a checklist of items that he noticed needed attention.  We have just received his draft report, final report to follow soon.
  • Kyle Hardwick from Convergint visited us and the school per our contract, on Dec. 1st thru 4th . He reviewed Jims’s list and worked on mentioned software programming.  He worked with Brandon throughout his visit, teaching Brandon a tremendous amount regarding our system and HVAC’s in general.  He has and is sending parts for repairs as we have many sensors not working on both sides of facility.  He has sent 2 reports and included Jim in his emails.
  • Aquatic sewer is still an issue and continues to deteriorate. We are experiencing frequent foul smells in Family locker room and are now unable to use our office sink as it drains into the same system and is coming up through floor cleanout in said locker room.
  • We helped to receive an additional $11K for repairs to the ballfield from windstorm damage earlier this fall. Part of the repairs have been completed to secure the bleacher roof before snowfall.  Further repairs will be completed in the spring.
This concludes my report, please present any questions you may have.

Operations
  • School and VSC are in Session and kids are in the facility!! Quite the difference between slow summer facility usage then into constant activity all day.  Excited to have them all back, but we are also back to limited Aquatic Center locker room usage.  All facility schedules are posted on FB, website, and multiple locations around the facility, as well as sent to KFSK.
  • Petersburg Bike Park has improved considerably over the summer. From individuals working on little projects to work parties to do some earth moving.  The entrance to the park has been established off Sandy Beach Rd, right on the corner.  The signage has been placed and we plan for more decorative additions next spring/summer.  An official name for the park has not been decided at this time but will be soon.
  • Staff Movement has been active in the past few months! Colin has resigned from his position and Daniel Pust has become our new Groundskeeper!  Alan Galarza has taken the Maintenance position since Keith moved to the Borough Maintenance position.  Chrystine Lynn has taken a position at the ferry terminal; her last day will be Sept. 9th.  We have added Callie Bell to the front desk, as well as moved Eric Lockhart from the custodian position to the front desk!  We still have a few positions open, please check with your people to see if anyone is looking for a job and wants to work with the funnest Borough department!
  • AMSEA Training was a-mazing!! “Surviving Outdoor Adventures” Educators Training.  We covered so many survival topics.  I look forward to our partnership with them and future training.
  • Survival Class!! As a result of my AMSEA training, Parks and Rec will be hosting a survival class on Sept 6th & 7th .  It will be a 2-day course with a focus on things to consider when venturing out for the upcoming hunting season.
  • Swim Lessons were very well received this summer! Every one of our Water Safety Instructors jumped in ?? to teach our community kids and all involved had a great time.  We are intending to continue lessons while we have the pool from Jan-May.
  • Staff Training never ends around here! Theresa has successfully completed TRX training and will be hosting classes and getting students prepared for a more advanced TRX journey.
  • Youth Basketball season is upon us! We have 79 kids signed up so far.  We need to find 3 more coaches (2nd/3rd and 4th-6th grade groups).  Please send any interested individuals to Julie Anderson.
  • Fall LG Course is in the making. Please keep any eye our for fliers and more information coming out!  If you know anyone interested in joining, please have them contact Scott Burt for sign-up.
  • Halloween Hustle will also need some volunteers for the fun game stations! If you would like to or know someone who would, please send them our way.
Maintenance
  • Alan Galarza, as mentioned above, will do a fantastic job in his new position, already learning a lot and digging in. He will join me in getting his Certified Pool Operator certification in November (I am due for recertification) in KTN.  He will also receive some HVAC training as we get Convergint down to give our units a system check (in conjunction with the schools).
  • Year-Round Restroom has been completed with the generous assistance of Public Works! While we do not have coverage to check on the restrooms on the weekends during winter, we will act accordingly with any issues that we come up against.
  • Weight Room Windows have also been installed with the assistance of Public Works! They look great and should be much more energy efficient and user friendly than our last/original set.  And much more safe!
  • Aquatic Sewer Repairs will be tentatively scheduled for next May, aligning with our annual closure. More about this will be in upcoming assembly meetings.

I will be gone from Oct. 2nd – 22nd , Julie Anderson will be Acting Director in my absence, but I will be checking in.

This concludes my report, please present any questions you may have.
